Remember The Magic 8-Ball

Remember “The Magic 8-Ball”—turn it over, get an answer?

There are many in the nonprofit community digging in their closets for that ball to help them with the future of revenue, fundraising, and even their survival.

A survey conducted nationally provided some answers - and the responses were - to use one an 8-ball like reply: “I see good news and bad.”

While charities had a downbeat outlook, donors responded in a way that provides optimism.

The survey, conducted the last days of March by Give.org, came up with these concerns from charities:

  • 80% of charities anticipate their 2020 revenue will be lower than expected.

  • Most charities - 89.4% - are concerned about maintaining a financially stable organization in 2020.

  • Charities anticipating decreased revenue believe that donors will be less likely to give about the same.

On the other hand, donors show hope:

  • More than half of the individuals - 52.5% - say they expect to give about the same.

  • Another 30.8% say they plan to give more.

And the even better news for those organizations that have been including the younger-than-Boomer generation in their family:

  • Younger generations intend to increase their giving.

  • 47.7% of Millennials (born 1981-1996) say they plan to give more.

  • 60.8% of Gen Z (born 1997-2012) say they plan to give more

My thoughts:

While nonprofits are deservedly wary, response from givers means having a post-Covid plan ready to go.
